Peru Man Dies in Two-Vehicle Crash on US 31

At approximately 4:58 a.m. Friday, officers from the Indiana State Police, the Peru Police Department, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two vehicle crash on U.S. 31 at Business 31, in which a Peru, IN man died.

A preliminary crash investigation by Trooper Dustin Rutledge revealed that Celena Borders, 41, Seymour, IN was driving a 2014 Freightliner semi-tractor, pulling a box trailer, northbound on U.S. 31 approaching a red stoplight at Business 31. The semi-tractor failed to stop for the red light and t-boned a 2005 Dodge pickup truck driven by Gregory Monin, 49, Peru, IN. The Dodge had the right away and was in the intersection, on Business 31, attempting a southbound turn.

Monin was transported via ambulance to a Peru hospital. Unfortunately he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Borders was not injured.

Borders was issued a citation for disregarding a traffic control device. (Red light).

This crash is still under investigation. At this time neither the use of alcohol nor narcotics is suspected as having contributed to the crash.

Borders was hauling empty crates for Bestway Expressway based in Vincennes, IN.
