Potential Sites for New Police Station Narrowed to Two

The list of possible sites for the new police station has been narrowed down to two sites, Frankfort Mayor Chris McBarnes announced Wednesday afternoon.

“The committee has narrowed it down to the former power plant that sits off of Washington Avenue just east of Milky Way across the creek on the north side of the road,” said McBarnes. “The other site is the former lot that housed Kyger Elementary School while it stood.”

The board of works elected to take the next step in the process at their Wednesday meeting.

“We approved today geo-technical drilling on both sites,” said McBarnes. “Now we want to evaluate the soil to see if there are any contaminants in each site. That information will be used to weight these two sites on where we will build the new police station.”

The two sites removed from consideration were the former CVS building on the west side and the former Marsh building on the east side.

McBarnes admits he has a preference to build a new station on the west side of town.

“When you look at the crime pattern, I like the idea of putting a police station where we have that kind of activity… to thwart that into the future,” said McBarnes.
