Public Hearing Scheduled for Proposed SR 26 Rehabilitation

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will host a public hearing on Thursday, June 6, at 6 p.m. (local time) at Rossville High Schooo, 1 Robert Egly Drive, Rossville, Indiana 46065.

The purpose of the public hearing is to offer all interested persons an opportunity to comment on current design plans for proposed road rehabilitation on S.R. 26 from approximately Rossville to Russiaville (0.5 mile east of U.S. 421 to 2 miles west of Russiaville). In addition, the project proposes intersection improvement at S.R. 26 and S.R. 75.

The purpose of the project is to enhance safety within the corridor and extend the usable service life of the existing roadway. Several improvements are proposed within various segments of the project area including increasing lane widths, providing roadside shoulder with portions to be paved, improving drainage, modifying and/or replacing culverts, installing rumble striping, improving sidewalk (in areas with existing sidewalk), adding a turning lane (S.R. 26 at S.R. 75) and other safety enhancements. The length of the project is approximately 15 miles.

As proposed, maintenance of traffic (MOT) for the project includes a combination of phased construction and closures. During phased construction for pavement replacement and widening efforts, INDOT anticipates keeping one lane of traffic open. An official detour route using several state and U.S. routes (S.R. 75, S.R. 18, U.S. 421, S.R. 29 and S.R. 18) will be used. A local detour route will be proposed for local residents as INDOT continues to develop a maintenance of traffic plan to ensure access for local residents and enhance safety for the community prior to, during and following construction. Additional information regarding maintenance of traffic will be presented during the public hearing. INDOT will continue to coordinate with local emergency services, school corporation transportation officials, local officials and other project stakeholders as part of maintenance of traffic coordination.

The proposed improvement will require approximately 153 acres of right-of-way along SR 26 with a number of parcels in various stages of the real estate acquisition process. Project funding is comprised of both federal and state funding sources.
