Richard “Dick” Ewing Smith, 92, of Kokomo, passed away 5:18 am Monday January 8, 2024, at Ascension St. Vincent in Kokomo. He was born in Carroll County, on November 29, 1931, the son of the late Daniel and Deana (Ewing) Smith. On January 2, 1952, he married Betty Ellen Gustafson, and she survives. They have celebrated 72 years of marriage together.
Dick was a 1950 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a hard working lifetime farmer and also retired from Chrysler after 32 years of service. He proudly served our country in the United States Army where he assisted with large equipment mechanics. Dick will be remembered for being a jokester and having a fun sense of humor. He was a faithful member of the Flora United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Burlington Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Scottish Rite, and Knight’s Templer. Dick supported the Shriners Hospitals for Children and was a member of the Masonic “Tranquility” Lodge located on the moon.
In addition to his wife Betty, Dick is survived by his children, Dan (Beth) Smith, Steve (LaRonda) Smith, Amy (Kevin) White; grandchildren, Jessica Coyner, Katherine (Bryan) Will, Evan (Lindsay) Smith, Marcia (Brian) Moore, Sean (Jenny) Smith, Anna White, Alec White, Christian White; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and Jane and brother-in-law Richard McCain.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11 am to 1 pm Monday January 15, 2024, at Flora United Methodist Church, 103 East Main Street, Flora, IN 46929. Funeral service will begin at 1 pm on Monday at the church, with Pastors Dave Osborne and Jim Farrer officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Carroll County VFW Military Rites Team.
