Work on State Roads 28 and 26 Set to Begin Thursday

Two major road projects are scheduled to underway Thursday in Frankfort and Clinton County, weather permitting.

The Indiana Department of Transportation State Road 28 project is scheduled to begin on April 1. The official detour for regional and long-distance traffic follows I-65 to State Road 47, to State Road 39, and back.

Plans are also in place to detour local truck traffic away from downtown Frankfort for the project’s duration. This detour plan has been created to help local truck traffic avoid the road closures on State Road 28 while protecting secondary streets.

Local trucks heading east on State Road 28 into Frankfort should use the following routes:

  • Northbound – Turn north off of State Road 28 onto N County Road 200 W, then turn north onto US 421.
  • Southbound – Turn south on Prairie Avenue, east on W. County Road 200 S. (Greenlawn), and south on State Road 39.
  • Eastbound – Follow the southbound detour (see above) to State Road 39. Turn north on State Road 39 and east on Kelley Road. Take Kelley Road to US 421.

“While we want outside traffic to follow the INDOT detours, we would like to provide a more reasonable route for our local companies to easily avoid the road closures with minimal impact to secondary streets,” said Frankfort Street Department Superintendent Jason Forsythe. “We ask drivers to be patient throughout this road improvement process. I believe the end result will be worth the temporary inconveniences these detours may cause.”

Traffic on State Road 28 in Frankfort is going to get messy.  All the disruption will be for a good cause and the entire west side of the  project (west of Jackson Street) is scheduled to be done by November 1.

Starting April 1, eastbound traffic on 28 from the railroad tracks near Schulz Market to Jackson Street will be closed for most of the summer. The intersection of 28 and Jackson by The Farmers Bank and CVS will be closed for five days to put in a new storm sewer and water pipe. The intersection will then be opened up with temporary asphalt.

The remainder of the project, which is Jackson through the city’s east side will be completed in 2022. The complete project is $17.2 million.

State Road 26 Also Begins Thursday

The Indiana Department of Transportation announces the State Road 26 pavement rehabilitation project in Clinton County from approximately Rossville to Russiaville is set to begin Thursday.

The first section of State Road 26 scheduled to close on or after Thursday is from just over one half of one mile east of Rossville to State Road 75. The official detour utilizes U.S. 421 to State Road 18 to State Road 75 and back. This section is scheduled to be closed until June 7, reopen and then close again July 10 through August 17 of this year.
