Rossville School Board Addresses Personnel, Curriculum, and Policy Updates at April Meeting

The Rossville Consolidated School District Board of Education met Tuesday evening, April 7, 2026, to conduct regular business, with a wide range of personnel, policy, and financial items highlighting the session.

The meeting opened with a special presentation from Pete Smith, Business Development Specialist with Performance Services, who provided an overview of the company’s design-build approach to school construction projects. The presentation emphasized efficiency, cost transparency, and streamlined project delivery for school districts. During the presentation, Smith also presented a $1,000 check to the school corporation on behalf of Dr. Jim Hanna for his involvement with the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, recognizing his professional leadership and engagement at the state level.

Following public comment, the Board approved minutes from the March meetings, along with claims, payroll, and financial reports, all of which had been provided to members in advance for review.

Several personnel matters were addressed, including the acceptance of resignations from custodial staff members Marsha Chaney and Jason Zimmerman, as well as band director Anna Fink, who will conclude her role at the end of the current school year. The Board also considered and approved a retroactive termination of a childcare worker due to repeated performance concerns and a lack of improvement following prior intervention.

The Board approved multiple Family and Medical Leave Act requests for staff members through the end of the 2025–2026 school year, along with several temporary and substitute teaching appointments to support staffing needs during those absences. Coaching and summer childcare program appointments were also approved to ensure continuity in student programming.

In addition, Superintendent Dr. Jim Hanna requested approval to transfer unused vacation days into the next school year, citing current balances and future needs.

Policy and handbook updates were a significant focus of the meeting. The Board reviewed and approved updates to the district’s 1:1 Student Device Handbook, as well as student and parent handbooks for Rossville Elementary and Rossville Middle/Senior High School. Changes included updates to attendance expectations, discipline procedures, electronic device policies aligned with Indiana Code, and adjustments to athletic and academic guidelines.

The Board also reviewed revisions to the job descriptions that shift responsibility for PK–5 special education coordination and Section 504 oversight to the elementary principal. Additionally, new and revised policies related to financial management, student residency verification, and field trips were presented for first and second readings.

Financial items included considering adding a part-time middle/high school math teacher to address class-size needs and expand course offerings. The Board also approved the adoption of Magnetic Literacy as a new elementary curriculum, representing a six-year investment of approximately $137,797, following a comprehensive review by teachers and parents.

The district also recognized recipients of the Teacher Appreciation Grant, awarding seven educators for their impact on student achievement. Additional approvals included acceptance of community donations, transportation arrangements for an upcoming Grandparents’ Day event, and contingency planning related to a damaged school bus and fleet management.

The meeting concluded with informational reports on upcoming staff conferences and student field trips, before the Board adjourned. The next regular meeting of the Rossville Consolidated School District Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
