Rossville Consolidated School District students are outperforming statewide averages across several key academic measures, according to newly released 2026 ILEARN results.
The results show Rossville students exceeding Indiana averages in English/language arts, mathematics, combined English and math proficiency, science, and social studies, providing an encouraging picture of academic achievement across the district.
In English/language arts, 49.9 percent of Rossville students in grades 3 through 8 demonstrated proficiency, compared with approximately 41.8 percent statewide. Some of the strongest results came in fifth grade, where nearly 74 percent of Rossville students were proficient, compared with approximately 42 percent statewide. Eighth-grade students also performed well, with 59.4 percent reaching proficiency compared with approximately 43.8 percent across Indiana.
Superintendent Dr. Jim Hanna said the results reflect the collective efforts of students, educators, families, and the community.
“We are extremely proud of our students and staff,” Hanna said. “Assessment results are only one measure of a school district, but these results provide important evidence that our students are learning and that the work taking place in our classrooms is making a difference. Being a smaller district allows us to know our students, understand their individual needs, and provide the support and opportunities necessary for them to succeed.”
Rossville also exceeded the statewide mathematics proficiency rate. Approximately 49 percent of Rossville students demonstrated proficiency compared with about 42.6 percent statewide.
Fifth-grade mathematics was particularly strong, with more than 71 percent of Rossville students demonstrating proficiency compared with approximately 42 percent across Indiana.
Rossville Elementary Principal Chad Dennison credited teachers and students for maintaining high expectations while focusing on individual student growth.
“Our teachers work extremely hard to provide students with strong foundational skills while challenging them to think, problem-solve, and apply what they are learning,” Dennison said. “The results are something our students and staff should be proud of, but they also give us valuable information about where we can continue to grow. Our focus remains on helping every student make progress.”
That success extended beyond elementary grades. Rossville’s eighth-grade English/language arts proficiency rate exceeded the state average by more than 15 percentage points.
Rossville Middle/Senior High School Principal Mike Hammons said academic success at the secondary level is built on both high expectations and continuity throughout a student’s education.
“Our students benefit from the strong academic foundation they receive in the elementary grades, and our middle and high school teachers continue building upon that foundation,” Hammons said. “We want students to understand that achievement is not simply about performing well on one assessment. It is about developing the knowledge, skills, work habits, and confidence that will prepare them for success after graduation.”
Other results were equally encouraging. Approximately 44 percent of Rossville students tested in science demonstrated proficiency, compared with approximately 42.1 percent statewide. In fifth-grade social studies, approximately 77.4 percent of Rossville students reached proficiency, more than 30 percentage points above the statewide rate of approximately 46.8 percent.
When English and mathematics are considered together, 36.6 percent of Rossville students demonstrated proficiency in both subjects compared with approximately 31.4 percent statewide. Among fifth graders, nearly 64.3 percent were proficient in both subjects, more than double the statewide rate of approximately 31.7 percent.
Hanna said the district will celebrate the accomplishments while continuing to use the results to identify areas for improvement.
“We have high expectations at Rossville, and these results reinforce our belief that students in a small, close-knit school community can achieve at very high levels,” Hanna said. “Our responsibility now is to build upon that success and continue working to ensure every Rossville student has the opportunity to achieve, lead, learn, and inspire.”
