Learning continued long after the school year ended as students participating in the Rossville Consolidated School District Summer Childcare Program spent the day exploring the Indianapolis Zoo, one of the nation’s premier zoological parks. The field trip combined fun with hands-on learning, allowing students to encounter animals from around the globe while deepening their understanding of wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting Earth’s diverse ecosystems.
Throughout the day, students experienced exhibits featuring animals from Africa, Asia, Australia, North America, and the world’s oceans. Whether observing a brilliantly colored snake in the Deserts exhibit, watching primates interact in their habitats, or exploring the Global Center for Species Survival, each stop provided opportunities for discovery and discussion. Students eagerly asked questions, shared observations with classmates, and connected what they had learned in school to the natural world around them.
One of the day’s most meaningful experiences was visiting the Global Center for Species Survival, a first-of-its-kind conservation center located at the Indianapolis Zoo. The center brings together scientists from around the world who work collaboratively to help protect endangered plants and animals. Through interactive displays and engaging exhibits, students learned how zoos have evolved beyond animal care to become leaders in wildlife research, conservation, and education.
The Indianapolis Zoo is recognized internationally for its commitment to protecting wildlife and inspiring future conservationists. As one of only a few institutions in the world accredited simultaneously as a zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden, the Zoo provides visitors with an immersive educational experience while promoting biodiversity and environmental stewardship.
For students in the Rossville Summer Childcare Program, the visit was about much more than seeing animals. The field trip supported science learning by encouraging students to observe animal behaviors, compare habitats, identify adaptations, and understand how human actions affect wildlife populations. These authentic learning experiences reinforce classroom concepts while encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for learning.
“Our Summer Childcare Program is designed to provide students with meaningful opportunities that are both educational and enjoyable,” said Dr. James Hanna, Superintendent of Rossville Consolidated School District. “Field trips like our visit to the Indianapolis Zoo allow students to explore the world beyond our classrooms while developing a greater appreciation for science, conservation, and the environment. These experiences create memories that last a lifetime and inspire curiosity that continues long after the trip is over.”
The Summer Childcare Program reflects Rossville Consolidated School District’s commitment to serving families beyond the traditional school day and school year. Students benefit from a safe, caring environment where learning continues through hands-on activities, creative exploration, outdoor experiences, and educational field trips. These opportunities help children strengthen friendships, build confidence, and discover new interests while remaining connected to their school community throughout the summer.
Parents often remark that the program provides much more than childcare—it gives students meaningful experiences that keep them engaged, active, and excited about learning. By blending academic enrichment with recreation and exploration, the program helps students return to school each fall ready to learn and eager to continue their educational journey.
As students gathered for group photos beneath towering primate displays and outside the Zoo’s Global Center for Species Survival, their smiles reflected a day filled with discovery, adventure, and shared experiences. From close encounters with reptiles to learning about global conservation efforts, every moment reinforced the idea that some of the best learning happens when students are encouraged to ask questions, explore new environments, and experience the world firsthand.
The Rossville Consolidated School District extends its appreciation to the staff members who organized and supervised the trip and to the Indianapolis Zoo for providing an exceptional educational experience. Experiences like these exemplify the district’s commitment to providing students with opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom, helping every child grow academically, socially, and personally. Whether during the school year or throughout the summer months, Rossville remains dedicated to creating engaging experiences that prepare students for success while making school a place where children are excited to learn, explore, and belong.
