ROSSVILLE, Ind. — Students in the Advanced Placement Environmental Science program at Rossville Consolidated School District recently stepped outside the classroom for a unique learning experience focused on environmental stewardship, renewable energy, and modern waste management practices.
Twenty-six AP Environmental Science students from Rossville Consolidated School District traveled to the Walnut Creek Landfill in Frankfort, Indiana, where they toured operations managed by Republic Services. The experience gave students an in-depth look at how communities manage solid waste and address long-term environmental challenges.
Before beginning the tour, students suited up in Tyvek protective suits that they had designed as part of a classroom activity, blending creativity with science-based learning. The visit was designed to connect classroom instruction with real-world environmental applications.
During the tour, Republic Services’ Environmental Manager provided students with a detailed presentation about the history, engineering, and future planning of the landfill. Students learned how modern landfills are carefully designed with environmental safeguards intended to reduce contamination and manage waste responsibly.
The class then visited an active landfill cell, where students observed daily landfill operations and gained a better understanding of how waste is compacted, managed, and monitored. Students also hiked to the top of a closed section of the landfill on the west side of the property, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding area and a visual perspective of how reclaimed landfill property can be managed over time.
The educational experience continued with a bus tour of the nearby Hardy Hills Solar Farm, where students explored the growing role renewable energy plays in communities across Indiana. Discussions focused on solar energy production, land use, sustainability, and the broader impact renewable energy projects can have on local economies and the environment.
The field experience reflects the district’s commitment to providing students with meaningful educational opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom instruction.
