Residents across central Indiana are facing a dangerous start to the day as severe thunderstorms move through the region, bringing threats of damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall, and possible tornadoes.
The National Weather Service has issued Tornado Watch 41 for much of central Indiana until 12:00 PM EDT Wednesday, covering 31 counties and including major population centers such as Indianapolis, Bloomington, Muncie, Terre Haute, and Columbus.
Morning Storms Pose Significant Threat
A line of strong thunderstorms expanded into central Indiana early Wednesday morning from the west. According to forecasters, the primary window for the most intense storms runs from about 4:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
These storms are capable of producing:
-
Damaging straight-line winds
-
Large hail
-
Very heavy rainfall
-
Isolated tornadoes
Localized flash flooding is also possible as heavy rainfall moves through areas that may already be experiencing high water levels.
Additional Severe Storms Possible This Afternoon
Forecasters warn that the severe weather threat may not end after the morning storms. Scattered thunderstorms could redevelop during the afternoon, particularly across the southeastern half of central Indiana.
The greatest risk for additional severe weather is expected between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM, with damaging wind gusts being the main concern.
Strong Winds Expected Across the Region
Even outside of thunderstorms, strong winds will impact much of the region. Wind gusts between 45 and 50 mph are possible through late Wednesday afternoon.
Looking ahead, another round of strong winds could arrive Friday, when gusts exceeding 40 mph are expected.
Spotters and Emergency Preparedness
The National Weather Service says storm spotter activation will likely be needed today, indicating a heightened level of concern for severe weather development.
Residents are urged to:
-
Monitor weather alerts and warnings throughout the day
-
Have multiple ways to receive emergency notifications
-
Seek shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued
With severe weather expected across much of the region, officials stress the importance of staying alert and prepared as conditions evolve throughout the day.
