January 25, 2026 – Central Indiana

Residents across central Indiana are facing a major winter storm bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerously low wind chills. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and an Extreme Cold Warning that will remain in effect through Monday morning.

Heavy Snowfall Today

Snow began falling early Sunday and is expected to continue throughout the day, accompanied by patchy blowing snow in the afternoon. Temperatures will reach a high near 13°F, but wind chill values are projected to drop to as low as -8°F during the day. North winds between 13 and 15 mph, with gusts up to 23 mph, will reduce visibility and create hazardous travel conditions.
Forecasters predict 3 to 5 inches of snow accumulation during the daytime and additional snowfall into tonight, with total accumulations ranging from 5 to 13 inches across central Indiana. The heaviest totals are likely in the southern portions of the region.

Dangerously Cold Tonight

Snow is expected to taper off by late evening, with lingering blowing snow overnight. Temperatures will plummet to around -3°F, and wind chill values could fall as low as -15°F. Winds will gradually shift to the west-northwest at around 11 mph, with gusts near 21 mph. The Extreme Cold Warning will remain in effect from midnight through 11 a.m. Monday, with wind chills expected to drop between -20°F and -25°F.

Monday: Bitter Cold with Some Sun

While skies will turn mostly sunny on Monday, dangerous cold will persist. The high temperature is forecast to reach only 6°F, and wind chill values in the morning may plunge to -21°F. West-northwest winds of 10 to 14 mph will maintain bone-chilling conditions throughout the day.

Extended Outlook

The extreme cold will continue well into the week. A Cold Weather Advisory will take effect from late Monday morning through Tuesday noon, warning of wind chills ranging from -10°F to -20°F. Overnight and early morning hours are expected to bring the coldest and most hazardous conditions.

Safety Precautions

Authorities urge residents to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
  • Dress in multiple layers, covering all exposed skin.
  • Bring pets indoors and ensure proper shelter for livestock.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat sources.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, food, and water if travel is necessary.

With heavy snow and bitter cold ahead, central Indiana faces one of the harshest winter events of the season. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local weather updates and follow any advisories from emergency management officials.
