Inside INdiana Business is reporting Sunday alcohol carryout sales in Indiana are another step closer to reality, and they could be coming even sooner than originally planned. Senate Bill 1, which allows carryout sales on Sundays at package liquor, grocery, convenience and drug stores, has passed the House Public Policy Committee.
The bill was approved the full Senate last month. The House Public Policy Committee passed the bill with an amendment that would make Sunday sales effective as soon as it’s signed into law by Governor Eric Holcomb, instead of waiting until July 1, the start of Indiana’s fiscal year.
Senator Ron Alting (R-22), who authored the bill, expressed his support for the amendment.
“I am thrilled to see Senate Bill 1 move out of the House Committee on Public Policy,” Alting said in a statement Wednesday. “I applaud (House Public Policy Chairman) Rep. (Ben) Smaltz (R-52) for his efforts in moving this bill forward, and I fully support the bill as amended today. Changing the effective date of this bill from July 1 to upon passage will provide Hoosiers with this convenience immediately. Why wait until July 1st?”
The bill now heads to the full House for consideration. Our partners at WIBC in Indianapolis reportthe House could vote as early as next week and, if it passes, the Senate would have to vote again because of the amendment.
