Susan Lee Null, 68, of rural Lafayette, passed away at her home on Saturday, November 28, 2020, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Hillsdale, MI on February 16, 1952, to Paul L. and Ann E. Hay Guise. She married Thomas R. Null on May 31, 1975 in Flora.
She spent her early years in Nettle Lake, Ohio before moving to a farm in Bringhurst, IN. Susan attended grade school in Flora then graduated in 1970 from Carroll High School.
As a stay-at-home mom of 4 children, she was always prepared to serve a yummy dessert or her specialty of baked steak. She enjoyed being a Cub Scout and Brownie leader, and was an active volunteer and participant in her children’s activities during the busy school-age years. The family fondly remembers years of camping together in beautiful places in a 1951 Chevy bus.
After a childhood as a farmgirl, she loved animals and gardening, and always had an active barnyard. Her favorites were a Guernsey cow (which she milked for over 10 years), raising chickens, watching birds, and gardening with her green thumb.
She was a member of the Dayton United Methodist Church for over 40 years where she was very active in leading children’s ministries, singing in the choir, and working as a secretary. Her greatest joy was seeing children begin a relationship with Jesus while leading Marketplace 29AD vacation bible school for over 17 years. She also played a mean standup bass with the Nullberries, specializing in folk and country tunes. She loved playing music at parties and reunions, but her favorite audience was the Alzheimer’s unit at Mulberry Lutheran Nursing Home.
Susan is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Thomas; sons, Travis Marshall (Julie) Null, West Thomas (Melissa) Null, and Casey Robert (Sarah) Null all of rural Lafayette; daughter, Holly Beth (Philip) Putnam of Decatur, TX; brothers, Tom (Linda) Guise of Alexandria and Chris (Jodi) Guise of Lafayette; brother-in-law Sherman Bowyer of Deer Creek; 17 beloved grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
