At approximately 7:09 a.m. Thursday just prior to the official start of the school day, a Boone Meadow Elementary School Resource Officer was notified by the school faculty of a suspicious beeping noise coming from a trashcan at the front of the school building. The SRO advised the school faculty and the few students in the building to evacuate out the back entrance to a safe location. The SRO approached the trashcan from a distance and noticed the lid was open and a solid beeping tone was coming from the area. The SRO notified the Boone County Communications Center, which alerted first responders.
Boone Meadow Elementary School students and faculty safely evacuated to a nearby Zionsville Community School to await further instruction. At approximately 9 a.m., parents and faculty were advised that students would be released for the day and parents could begin picking up their children. Boone Meadow Elementary School Families were advised to follow Parent Square, the district’s mass notification system for ongoing updates.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Bomb Squad arrived on the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m. to investigate. The investigation concluded that the beeping sound was a discarded diabetic medical device that was still beeping upon retrieval. Boone Meadow Elementary School was cleared for safety and there is no threat to the community or school.
