The Thorntown Heritage Museum will host a Memorial Day Service Monday, May 25 at the museum. Traditionally, American Legion Post 218 hosts the service at the Veterans Memorial Stone in Tom Johnson Memorial Park in Thorntown.

This year, the Legion was unable to host its annual service. Thorntown Heritage Museum and Sugar Creek Historical Society are stepping in to ensure this important day is not forgotten.

The service will begin at 10am on the Museum’s front lawn. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, as there will be limited seating available. Boone County Reserve Deputy Tom Melville will be the guest speaker for the ceremony and will sing the National Anthem.

Following the program, the Thorntown Heritage Museum will have an open house marking the start of its 2026 open season. A new and improved Thorntown School History room and Native American history room will debut on opening. The Native American history room features new collections from the American Indian Council, INC of Boone County and the Grosz family.

A new temporary exhibit celebrating America’s 250th birthday will also be on display. Free tours will be offered, along with cookies and lemonade for guests to enjoy.

The Thorntown Heritage Museum is open Saturdays from Memorial Day through September from 11am- 3pm. Tours are always free. Weekday tours can be requested by appointment by calling 765-436-7348 or emailing kwamsley@thorntownpl.org.
