Ahead of the Festival of the Turning Leaves beginning today, the Thorntown Police Department released a statement to set guidelines and issue reminders for community members to follow as they celebrate the festival throughout the weekend.
The department stated that today, Friday, Sept. 27 may be the worst of the weather concerns the community will experience this weekend, and attendees are encouraged to drive slower than usual as individuals will likely be crossing the streets to visit the various yard sales in the area through the rain and winds.
The department stated that winds will be high drivers should be aware of fallen limbs and possible power lines being downed. Drivers are instructed to call 911 immediately in the event that a downed power line is discovered.
As well, the department encouraged community members to abide by the posted signs signifying “no parking” areas, including South Pearl Street, Mill Street, West Street, Main Street, some blocks of Bow Street and some blocks of North Pearl Street.
“We need to keep these routes clear of vehicles for both the parade route and the detour routes,” the department released. “No parking on state highways. Vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense.”
Permits will not be required to drive golf carts, UTVs and side by sides during the festival days, but the department stated that driving on state highways, including Main Street and South West Street is prohibited. Violators will be subject to citations, and valid drivers’ licenses are required. Children operating carts will result in the carts being impounded. Young children must be secured in car seats as well.
The department further stated that curfew will be strictly enforced over the weekend.
“We have had a few too many juvenile cases lately,” the department released. “Please help us make sure your children are where they should be and being safe.”
