Troopers are investigating a deadly single vehicle crash that occurred on I-65 southbound near the I-70 interchange. Emergency crews were notified at 7:30 p.m. Saturday of a serious crash near an area known as the South Split. One motorist who stopped to help happened to be a nurse, she was able to give information to the 911 operator as well as begin CPR. The Indianapolis Fire Department and Troopers from the State Police arrived and despite life saving efforts the male was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The deceased male was later identified at 44-year-old David Lopez of Oswego, Illinois.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Ford pick-up truck ran off the roadway on the ramp from southbound I-65/I-70 to southbound I-65. The truck then struck a guardrail, became airborne and the driver was ejected.
Just prior the the crash this vehicle was reported as weaving all over the roadway. Investigators believe alcohol could be a factor in this crash. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, which contributed to the fatal injuries.
I-65 southbound was closed for more than two hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed.
