At approximately 5:20 a.m. Monday morning, Indiana State Police Dispatchers began receiving emergency calls about a serious crash in the roadway on I-65 northbound near the 127 mile marker (86th Street). When first responders arrived they located two heavily damaged vehicles, one with an adult male trapped inside. Firefighters from the Pike Township Fire Department extricated the male and transported him to an area hospital where he was later pronounce deceased. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured and transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
Preliminary investigation by troopers on scene, as well as Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists, determined a small passenger car was southbound on I-65 when the driver of that car ran off the road into the grass median, through the cable divider and came to a stop in the northbound lanes of I-65. A northbound Jeep Wrangler then struck the stationary passenger car. The driver of the passenger car was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in this crash, the investigation is ongoing and there is no further information to release at this time.
The northbound lanes of I-65 were closed for approximately five hours while the crash was investigated and the scene was cleared.
