United Way Announces Summer Food Program Schedule

This summer United Way for Clinton County is partnering with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Healthy Communities, Center Township of Clinton County, Community Schools of Frankfort, and Clinton County Family YMCA to bring free summer food to children and teens in Frankfort through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSA).  This summer there will be 7 sites: Boys and Girls Club, Circle Park, El Camino, Healthy Communities, Prairie Creek Park and for two weeks at Suncrest Elementary.  Meals will begin May 31.

When Anita Stewart, Executive Director of United Way for Clinton County, learned that the YMCA was not able to do the summer food program this summer, she sprang into action.  “I went to my board, and they agreed that this program needed to happen.  They knew it would be a lot of extra work for United Way but knowing kids would be missing meals and going hungry was not an option.”

Anita connected with Ruth Foust with Community Schools of Frankfort who has been helping the YMCA run the SFSP program for years along with her team from Frankfort High School.  “Ruth is a wealth of information,” Stewart shared.  “She has been so helpful as United Way gets up and running this year as a new sponsor.”

Teens and children under the age of 18 can visit any of these sites beginning May 31st to receive a free meal.  There is no registration required.  For the most part, meals won’t be “grab and go” this year; they will be served and need to be eaten on site.  Site supervisors must follow strict guidelines from the state.  Parents are not allowed to eat off the child’s plate and children can’t share food amongst themselves.  “Some of the rules may not seem like a big deal,” Bethany Sheets, Assistant Director of United Way and Monitor for the SFSP, “but we have to follow the rules to a T if we want to get the meals funded by the state program.”

Sheets continued, “We encourage families to follow us on Facebook for weekly menus and activities.  Locations and times are also listed on our website uw.clintoncounty.org/summerfood.”
