USB Approves Procedures Dealing With Disconnects

The Utility Service Board Monday night set up the parameters for everyone to try and take care of their utility bills who have been dealing with disconnects.

“We don’t want to turn anybody’s services off,” said USB Chairman Mike Kelley. “We want to try and work with them to come up with a plan that will allow them to continue their services uninterrupted and still maintain a good lifestyle for their family and not miss rent, food or whatever.

“But, we have bills too that have to be paid,” continued Kelley. “We’ve been covering for more than 400 people for almost five months now. We want to get our money from them. But we want to be as kind as possible and understanding.”

With that mind, the USB drafted a letter that will be sent to those who are facing disconnects. The following is that letter:

“As of August 14, 2020 Governor Holcomb’s orders concerning disconnects expired. Frankfort Municipal Utilities has decided to extend these orders until September 15, 2020 to give our customers an opportunity to make payment arrangements if needed.

“Effective September 15, 2020, disconnections will begin again. All past due payments must be taken care of before 10 a.m. on September 15 to avoid any interruption in service. If you are unable to make the full payment we are offering six months payment plans, but they must be set up before September 15, 2020 by contacting Frankfort Municipal Utilities Billing Office in person or by phone to avoid being disconnected. Frankfort Municipal Utility Billing Office located at 1405 E Wabash St, and the phone number is 765-659-3361.

“You may also contact Area IV 765-447-7683, and your local township trustee’s office for additional assistance Center Township 765-357-9100.

“All late penalties and fees will resume on October 14, 2020.

“If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the FMU Billing Office.”

The letter is signed by Utility Service Board members Mike Kelley, Chairman, Kent Brewer, Vice Chairman, Joe Root, Mike Reeder and Rick Gunyon as well as Frankfort Municipal Utilities Personnel Todd Corrie, General Manager, and Stacy Uitts, Billing Office Manager.

Kelley added this apply to all services — water, sewer, electric and storm water.

Uitts said the number of disconnects as of Monday were 437.

Uitts also said their drop box services are currently down and added she hopes that will be fixed and back open by the first of next week.
