Legislation sponsored by State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) to increase Indiana police officers and firefighters pension benefits from the 1977 Fund could soon become law.
The 1977 Fund was created for eligible police officers, firefighters and their spouses to help pay for retirement, disability and survivor benefits. VanNatter’s legislation would increase the monthly amount beneficiaries receive.
“In the more than 40 years since its establishment, the 1977 Fund will finally receive an increase,” VanNatter said. “Our public servants deserve proper compensation after decades of service in this career, risking their lives to protect their neighbors.”
For these retired members, the 2 percent raise to pension benefits would be more than $1,000 yearly on average.
Senate Enrolled Act 85 is now eligible for action by the governor. To learn more, visit iga.in.gov.
