Vera Lee Winger Swantner, 92, of Frankfort, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Wesley Manor in Frankfort. She was born in Crawford County, Illinois on April 23, 1928 to Lawrence Earl and Hazel (Correll) Winger. She married M. Thomas Swantner on June 10, 1951 in Speedway, IN; he passed on December 17, 2012.
Vera graduated from Robinson Township High School in Robinson, IL in 1945. In 1952, Vera graduated from Manchester College with a bachelor’s degree. Prior to graduation, she attended Butler University and Herron School of Art. Vera had taught school for 2 years in the public school system and then ran an in-home tutoring school. She and her husband moved to Frankfort in 2006 after her husband retired from the ministry.
Vera had been a member of P.E.O. and Pana United Methodist Church in Illinois and was also active with Heifer International including educating others about Heifer International. She loved to travel and camp.
Vera is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Ellen (Kim) Heusel of Indianapolis and Laura Frances (John) Johnson of Cochiti Lake, NM; grandchildren, Aaron Keith Heusel, Robin David (Natalie) Heusel and Thomas Glenn Heusel, and three great grandsons, Xander, Elijah and Tobias Heusel.
She is preceded in death by her parents and an infant son David Wesley.
Memorial services and inurnment will be in the Mound Cemetery in Pana, IL at a later date. Memorials may be made to Heifer International, Jimmy Carter Center, Habitat for Humanity, Wesley Manor Good Samaritan Fund or the donor’s choice.
