Demolition of the Washington Street buildings has progressed to the point where Building Inspector Sam Payne feels it is safe to reopen the street. The burned structures are torn down, and the demolition crew is working on the remaining debris pile.
Payne said, “We are planning to sweep Washington Street from Main Street to Columbia Street to clear any debris and open the street Friday evening, May 3 or Saturday morning May 4 at the latest.”
A projected end-date for the demolition has not been established. Work will continue in this area until all building debris is removed and the final site work is completed. Payne notes, “Drivers can expect to see occasional street closures from time to time until all the site work is finalized.”
The City of Frankfort will continue to update the community until all work is completed.
