The Town of Whitestown officially adopted proclamations recognizing April as both Child Abuse Prevention Month and Autism Awareness Month during last night’s Town Council meeting.
Child Abuse Prevention Month:
During the Child Abuse Prevention Month recognition, the Town highlighted organizations such as Prevent Child Abuse Boone County for their commitment to preventing child abuse and neglect as they work to create a safer and more supportive environment for children.
In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced the pinwheel as the national symbol for child abuse prevention due to their connection with joy and childhood to create a tangible reminder of the childhood experiences every child deserves. As they spin, the pinwheels symbolize the positive cycles of love and support that the organization aspires for every family to create. In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, a pinwheel garden has been set up at the Whitestown Municipal Complex.
Any community member with a suspicion that a child may have experienced neglect or abuse is encouraged to contact the Indiana Department of Child Services at 1-800-800-5556.
Autism Awareness Month:
During the Autism Awareness Month proclamation, the Town recognized that in 2023, the World Health Organization reported that approximately one in 100 children have autism and the abilities and needs of individuals can vary and may change over time. Signs of autism may be identified in early childhood, a diagnosis is frequently made later.
The Town recognized the Behavior Analysis Center for Autism located in Whitestown for its service to the community by supporting children and families in developing the skills needed for a happy and fulfilling life.
