What is Tai Chi and how can it help prevent falls?

Tai chi is gaining popularity in the United States as an exercise that can be practiced regardless of age, or physical ability.  It requires no special equipment and is done from standing or seated position. Tai chi movements are slow, smooth, and continuous, helping to strengthen internal muscles. Practitioners are mindful of transferring weight with each step, helping to improve mobility, coordination and balance. According to one study, tai chi may reduce the rate of falls by 19 percent. Tai chi is an internal art, which stresses the integration and balance of mind and body. Practitioners sharpen their focus, calm their minds, and loosen and relax their joints and ligaments. It is an exercise that can be practiced for a lifetime!
