Work Crews Discover Deceased Man Near I-70 Utility Pole in Indianapolis

Indiana State Police

Work crews cleaning up the side ditches along I-70 on the west side of Indianapolis this morning discovered a deceased body near a utility pole.

Indiana State Police Dispatchers were notified of the discovery at approximately 10:21 a.m. When first responders arrived they found an unresponsive adult male partially inside an access panel into a utility pole. Still in the man’s hands was a cutting tool commonly used to cut bolts or large wires. The man’s hands showed signs of electrocution. The Marion County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and will work to determine the exact cause of death.

The utility pole is owned and maintained by INDOT.. Indications are the man was attempting to illegally obtain wire from inside the pole.

The Indiana State Police is asking community members to report any suspicious activity near these utility poles, which include light poles and towers used for cameras along the interstates.

This is an ongoing investigation with no further information to release at this time.
