Dayton Elementary School held the 3rd annual Kindy 500 on Thursday.
Sixty kindergarteners and their families had the opportunity to build cardboard race cars and race against classmates.
Throughout the week students learned about the Indianapolis 500 and it’s importance to Indiana history.
Dayton Elementary Kindergarten Teacher Carolyn Howard explains more about the event.
“They come in with their cars that their families have made. We have our parade. They have to pass their test to get their drivers license. They get their eyes tested, they do a road sign test, then they do a driving test and then in the afternoon they earn their own drivers license and that is when we actually have our race,” said Howard.
She also explained why the students like the event.
“It just is memories that they are making, the connection is huge because like I said, we are so small being Dayton and their world is so small but the connection to the state and building that is so important. It just broadens their eyes and their experiences,” Howard said.
They are looking forward to seeing what they can do with the event in the future.
