A requested welfare check on a woman in Carroll County resulted in her transport to a hospital for medical and recovery resources as well as charges filed.
On Saturday, Aug. 24, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was reportedly requested to perform a welfare check on a female subject who had checked herself out of a hospital against medical advice, and the woman was located as she traveled toward Illinois.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the reporting party stated that the female was in poor health and was traveling to Illinois to purchase over-the-counter supplements labeled as “Za Za,” which the department stated was commonly known as “gas station heroin” and “Pegasus gold.”
Deputies reported that the subject was located and a welfare check was performed, which led to an investigation that determined that some of the ingredients of the “Za Za” supplements in her possession were illegal to possess in Indiana. The department stated that the effects of the substance mimicked the effects of heroin, and the female reportedly admitted to being addicted to the product while aspiring to seek medical help.
The department stated that the female was transported to a hospital for medical treatment to assist with her road to recovery, and a report will be forward to the Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office for review for possession of a schedule 1 substance.
“The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office hopes the post will educate the public on this new and dangerous substance being found in our community,” the department released.
