A bill authored by State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon) that would reduce the red tape needed for students to get their pharmacist licenses passed the Senate today by a vote of 45-3 with bipartisan support and will now go to the governor for his consideration.
Senate Enrolled Act 293 would remove the requirement for pharmacists to take a law exam to become a licensed pharmacist in Indiana. Instead, pharmacists would take continuing education courses to ensure they understand current state laws and policies.
“I will always support the needs of our pharmacists in Indiana. They are a vital part of the health care industry,” Buchanan said. “Senate Enrolled Act 293 is what pharmacists have asked for, and I believe we’ve delivered a bill that meets their needs and sets them up for future success.”
Buchanan worked with the Indiana Pharmacy Association, which represents the profession in Indiana on the legislation, with the purpose of optimizing patient care through legislation and innovations in pharmacy practice.
SEA 293 now heads to the governor desk for further consideration.
