James William Anderson

Goodwin Funeral Home

James William Anderson, 80, of Frankfort, Indiana, passed away quietly at his home on Friday, September 11, 2026, following a long illness.

James was born on July 27, 1946, in LaPorte, Indiana, to James and Flonnie (Pascal) Anderson.

As a young man, Dad answered the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War. His service came with great sacrifice, and he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received while serving. It was an important part of his story, though like so many who served, he rarely spoke much about those years. His family remains deeply proud of the sacrifice he made for his country.

Dad had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs and horses. But if you really wanted to know what mattered most to him, you only had to look at his family.

He was a man who championed his children. When life knocked them down, he built them back up. When things became difficult, he reminded them to keep going. And when they were standing at one of life’s crossroads, Dad would remind us to stop, think about their choices, and consider where those choices might lead. He wanted his children to believe in themselves, make good decisions, and keep moving forward.

Perhaps one of the best things that can be said about Dad is the kind of father he chose to be. To the rest of the world, Robert, Ann Marie, and Buddy may have been his stepchildren, but Dad never saw them that way. There was no distinction in his heart. They were his children, and he was their dad. He loved them, raised them, stood beside them, and made sure they knew they belonged to him.

He was the dad he did not have to be, and that made the gift of his love all the more meaningful.

And then there were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They held an especially tender place in Dad’s heart. Being Grandpa, and later Great-Grandpa, brought him a special kind of joy. He shared an especially close bond with his oldest grandson, Austin, whom he helped raise and of whom he was incredibly proud. Their relationship was built over years of everyday moments, guidance, laughter, and love. Austin always knew he had a grandfather in his corner.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents, James and Flonnie (Pascal) Anderson, and his wife, our Mother, JudyAnn.

He is survived by his children, Robert Steffy of Hoopeston, Illinois; Ann Marie (John) Crider of Beaver Dam, Kentucky; Buddy Steffy (Josh) of Knightstown, Indiana; James Anderson of Frankfort, Indiana; and Jason Anderson (Misty) of Frankfort, Indiana; his sister, Linda Stocks of Evansville, Indiana; along with his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Eighty years leaves behind a lot of life. It leaves stories that still make you laugh, lessons you hear again in your mind when you need them most, and little reminders that show up when you least expect them. Dad leaves behind those kinds of things, along with a family who knew they were loved and who will continue carrying pieces of him with them.

There will be no public funeral service. Dad’s family will gather privately at his graveside to say goodbye, where he will receive full graveside military honors through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in recognition of his service to our country.

And now, after a long journey, Dad can rest.

There is great comfort in knowing that Dad passed away on Mom’s birthday. We absolutely believe that was no coincidence. In our hearts, we believe Mom came for him, took his hand, walked him home, and introduced him to Jesus.

May he rest peacefully, reunited with Mom and those who were waiting for him on the other side. His work here is finished, but the love, lessons, and family he leaves behind will carry on, just as he taught us to do.
