The National Council for Home Safety and Security announced Monday that the City of Frankfort is ranked 23rd among the Safest Cities in the State of Indiana. This is quite a jump for the Gem City after it achieved its first-ever ranking on the list a year ago at number 50.
Mayor Chris McBarnes said the credit for this improvement goes to the Frankfort Police Department headed up by Police Chief Troy Bacon and Assistant Police Chief Scott Shoemaker.
“We know families look at safety in communities before they reside,” said McBarnes. “This is an important part of economic development and quality of place. Frankfort is on the cusp of a real change.
McBarnes also credited residents looking out for the fellow neighbors.
The cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes assigned a value 1.5 times (due to their severity) that of property crimes.
The top 10 cities in Indiana in order are: Zionsville, St. John, Carmel, Fishers, Dyer, West Lafayette, Westfield, Crown Point, Brownsburg and Jasper.
