James Bien, MD, FAAP has accepted the position of Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Quality and Safety for Indiana University Health Arnett and the West Central Region effective January 6, 2019. Bien joined Arnett Clinic in 1999 as a pediatrician and quickly moved through a series of physician leadership roles. Bien has served as the interim Chief Medical Officer since May 2018.
Bien is passionate about the welfare of our patients and the health of our community. Bien is a physician advocate. He is admired for his compassionate leadership, deep intellect, future insight, integrity and his commitment to lifelong learning.
In this position, Bien will serve as the senior physician executive for West Central Region of IU Health. His responsibilities include serving as the senior executive for the 300 member IU Health Arnett Physician Group; serving as the senior physician executive providing oversight of quality and patient safety; and engage with IU Health on important system initiatives.
Bien earned his bachelor of science in biomedical engineering from Marquette University, his medical degree from Northwestern University and trained in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center with an additional year as chief resident in pediatrics. Bien is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine at Purdue University. He has served in leadership positions with the Indiana Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics. Bien also serves numerous community organizations including: Tippecanoe County Board of Health, Tippecanoe County Child Fatality Review Team, Bauer Family Resources Board of Directors and the Community Advisor Board for the Purdue University School of Nursing.
Bien is an avid cyclist, outdoorsman and reader. He and his wife Cadi have three children and reside in West Lafayette.
