Board of Works Approves New Appraisal for CVS West Building

The possibility of the new Frankfort Police station winding up near downtown isn’t quite dead just yet after the Board of Works approved Monday getting another appraisal on the CVS West building. The cost for the appraisal was $3,475 and has a three-week turnaround.

“There’s been a lot of discussion with the Police Councilmatic Committee,” said Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets. “I just wanted to look at our options out there. There’s been a lot of discussion whether the airport was the best choice for us right now. They still have the CVS building available right now. I said let me give it one last try. Let’s see what we can do. I contacted the realtor, he got with the owner and they are ready to talk to us again.”

Sheets did acknowledge the building has had some issues on the inside.

“They did a lot of repairs out there,” she said. “It was leaking and they had some damage and different things happened within in the building. But, they’ve worked a lot on doing the repairs.”

In other news, the Board of Works approved the hire of K9 Athena.

In a release, Frankfort Deputy Police Chief Scott Shoemaker said, “Athena is a two-and-a-half year old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix and she is certified through the North American Police Work Dog Association. K9 Athena and Officer Chris Salaba just graduated from a six-week K9 school at FMK9 in Berrien Center, Michigan. She is trained in the odors of Marijuana, Heroin, Cocaine and Methamphetamine.”

The board also took under advisement bids for the new restrooms at Redmon Park (Third Street Park) and Dorner Park.

The board also announced more information will be coming later this week on “Be Kind Week”, which will be held June 15-19 in the City of Frankfort.
