Boone County Sheriff’s Office Seeks Volunteers For Bloodhound Training

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking volunteers to be trail layers for the department bloodhounds.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office bloodhounds hone their skillset with the help of volunteers.

The Sheriff’s Office bloodhounds have received specialized training to search for people in a multitude of different environments and conditions, and the training days currently scheduled will be once a week to continue to hone the bloodhounds’ skills.

The Sheriff’s Office is looking for highly motivated individuals that can participate in a minimum of four hours of training per training day, can walk long distances in different weather conditions and over varying types of terrain, can follow directions using aerial maps and drawings, can submit to a background check and can utilize a working cell phone. The Sheriff’s Office also seeks those who are a citizen in good standing.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, bloodhound trails cover areas that range from county rural areas to highly populated urban areas, and the tracks can range from .5 miles to 2 miles long. The Sheriff’s Office reported that the bloodhound trails can sometimes be several hours old as the canines track the scent.
