Community Members Brave The Cold For An Exciting 2023 Halloween

Amidst snow flurries and frigid temperatures, the Clinton County community gathered in downtown Frankfort to celebrate Halloween with trick-or-treating, trunk-or-treats and costume contests.

Trick or treating on the square in downtown began at 5:30 p.m. with opportunities for community members to gather candy from local downtown businesses and booths set up by local organizations before exploring the rest of Frankfort to gather more candy.

Attendees of the event were treated to a costume contest for ages four and under, ages five to nine and ages 10 to 15 at the Veterans’ Park gazebo. The contest was judged by Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets, Marvel Albitz and Don Albitz for the categories of “cutest,” “scariest” and “most creative.” Costumes ranged from elaborate thematic designs, such as a homemade rocket and castle, to more traditional costumes, such as princesses, butterflies and more. One winner from the ages 4 and under contest sported a homemade rocket with operational lighting and music that created an atmosphere that wowed the judges and secured the contestants designation as “most creative” for the ages 4 and under group. The family members who helped piece together the costume commented that the product was the result of “hours upon hours of work.”

The Scare on the Square event hosted by Frankfort Unified Neighborhoods, known locally as the F.U.N Group, kicked off at 5:30 p.m. on South Main Street. Members of the community were invited to flex their creativity with the Halloween Night Trunk or Treat event, which was judged by members of the F.U.N Group as well as Mayor Sheets. After lengthy deliberation, the judges decided to focus on the creativity of one design that featured a creepy scene portrayed by baby dolls. According to F.U.N Group members, many potential contestants for the Scare on the Square costume contest were held up in the lines stretching from Veterans’ Park to South Main Street, which resulted in a low turnout for the costume contest. F.U.N Group Administrator Rodney Mounts commented that next year’s costume contest will likely be hosted at 7 p.m. to allow families more time to transition from the downtown costume contest to the Scare on the Square costume contest.

The Town of Colfax costume contest will continue to receive votes until Friday, Nov. 3 at midnight. Community members may vote for their favorite costumes by visiting the Colfax, Indiana Facebook Page and placing a “like” on the picture of their favorite costume. Any ties will be broken by the town board. The winner of the costume contest will be featured as the profile picture of the town Facebook page.

Mischief on Meridian kicked off on Oct. 28 for the Lebanon community to partake in a downtown Halloween event prior to Halloween trick-or-treat hours. The event featured over 50 trunk-or-treat stations with special candy buckets for community members with allergies, a haunted alleyway attraction, a flash mob by Talent Factory Arts and Dance, performances by local bands and entertainers, sensory stations for members of the community needing a calm atmosphere amidst the crowds of downtown Lebanon and much more. Mischief on Meridian will return next year on Oct. 26 in downtown Lebanon.
