Inside INdiana Business is reporting that FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) has announced plans to build a $259 million small-package distribution center in Greenwood. Speaking before the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission Tuesday, officials said the 608,000-square-foot facility could create up to 455 jobs, most of them part-time. The commission voted to recommend the Greenwood City Council approve a more than $17 million tax abatement for the facility.
The facility would sit on 236 acres of land near the Interstate 65 interchange at Worthsville Road. In an interview with Inside INdiana Business, Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers says FedEx’s decision to invest in Greenwood is “all about location and infrastructure.”
“What their overall plan is to do is to build a 600,000-square-foot facility now and then, years down the road, they’ll have the room there to build a mirror-image building if they need it to double up their delivery,” said Myers. “Then also, we have the water, we have the sewer, we have the fiber, the cable, everything that’s needed there to support that type of a facility.”
FedEx says construction could begin in the spring or summer of 2018 with operations expected to begin in June of 2020. FedEx says the project would bring 80 full-time jobs with an average wage of $24.55 an hour and 375 part-time jobs with an average wage of $14.24.
A time frame for the council’s decision on approving the tax abatement request was not given.
The company says the facility would be a spinoff of its Northern Kentucky Hub. The project is one of eight new hubs FedEx has planned between 2018 and 2023.
