Frankfort Education Association Agrees to New Contract

The Community Schools of Frankfort and the Frankfort Education Association have agreed to a new one-year teachers contract, Superintendent Don DeWeese announced Tuesday night.

DeWeese said the new contract was status quo meaning there was no financial increase for the teachers this year. DeWeese added the negotiations started in October and were basically completed in six weeks.

In other news, the board received information on how its students fared on the math portion of the ISTEP test. The report said Frankfort students had their highest growth since 2014 and fifth-grade students showed a 15 percent increase overall, which was the best among the grade levels which took the test. However, 85 percent of 10th grade students failed to pass as did 78 percent of seventh-graders.

DeWeese said architects are expecting that the Frankfort High School renovation project is expected to be 99 percent complete by spring break in March. With that in mind, CSF officials are wanting to have a ribbon cutting ceremony at the high school by the end of April or the first of May.

The board also passed a resolution supporting the authorization for waiving the statutory requirement of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), allowing Indiana to preserve its current diploma types. The resolution says the board supports the Indiana Department of Education’s formal request to the U.S. Secretary of Education to waive the statutory requirement for ESSA.
