Hot Dogs Blank Southmont in Sectional Baseball Opener

Christian Lopez tossed a complete game shutout and freshman Deacon Spencer did a great job behind the plate to lead Frankfort to a 4-0 victory over Southmont Wednesday in the opening round of sectional play at North Montgomery.

The victory moved the Hot Dogs into a sectional semifinal matchup on Monday against North Montgomery at 1:30 p.m. A win would move the Dogs into the championship game at 6:30 p.m. that evening against either Crawfordsville or Lebanon.

Solid defense and aggressive baserunning also propelled Frankfort to the victory in the sectional opener.

On Saturday, Frankfort defeated Hamilton Heights 14-2 in the first of two games that day. Casey Henry and Roger Angeles each had three hits for FHS. Lopez got the victor and Benito Lopez pitched a perfect inning in relief.

Saturday night, the Hot Dogs ended the regular season with a 6-4 victory over second-ranked Crawfordsville. Jose Valdes Sandoval pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.

In softball, Frankfort’s season ended Tuesday with an 11-1 loss to Tri-West in the second round of the sectional. Morgan Dean and Katie Roberts each had one hit for Frankfort, which struggled offensively. The Hot Dogs ended their season at 16-10.

On Monday, Frankfort opened sectional play with a 20-5 triumph over North Montgomery. The Hot Dogs broke open a tight game by scoring 13 runs in the third inning. Sydni Whitaker went 3 for 4 for FHS followed by Chloe Roberts, who went 2 for 3. Avery Drew, Karim Quinones, Kimee Kingma and Tarah Martinez each added a hit. Drew got the victory for FHS.

In boys’ golf, Frankfort has a three-shot lead after the first nine holes Wednesday in the county golf meet at Frankfort Commons. Frankfort shot 178, followed by Rossville 181, Clinton Prairie 204 and Clinton Central 206. Leading individuals were Sascha Pirch of Frankfort 39, Grant McGraw of Prairie 42, Drew Grismer of Frankfort 44, Bryce Oliver of Rossville 44 and Nathan Shafer of Rossville 45.

Before that, Pirch took medalist honors with a 39 as Frankfort defeated Northwestern 187 to 216 at Frankfort Commons. Grismer carded a 46.

On Saturday at Rocky Ridge in Darlington, the Hot Dogs placed fifth in the Sagamore Conference meet. Pirch and Grismer led FHS with rounds of 90.

In girls’ tennis, Frankfort’s season came to a close with a 3-2 loss to Western Boone in the opening round of the sectional. Emily Michael won her singles match, while the doubles team of Jaylynn Kidwell and Rebecca Perez also won.

The loss ended a very successful season for FHS, which finished 17-6 and were co-champions of the Sagamore Conference. This was the first time in 15 years that a Frankfort tennis team, male or female, had achieved such a milestone.

Michael advanced to regional play at Avon and lost a hard fought match.

In girls’ track, Nallely Alanis finished fifth in the 100 meter hurdles and seventh in the 300 meter hurdles while Alysha Ramey took sixth in the high jump in the regionals on Tuesday. Both qualified in regional competition at Harrison. Alanis was second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles. Ramey tied for second in the high jump.

Frankfort placed sixth out of 12 teams at the regional, improving upon last year’s ninth place finish.

In boys’ track, Frankfort was 10th at the sectional meet at West Lafayette. Scoring competitors for FHS were Hugo Hernandez (eighth in the 3200), Evan Jordan (sixth in the 200 and fourth in the high jump), Alex Kimbowa (eighth in the 400), the 4×800 relay team was eighth and the 4×400 team placed sixth.
