Kokomo Police Investigating Fatal Crash

At approximately 8:50 p.m. Sunday, officers from the Kokomo Police Department responded to a crash involving two vehicles at the intersection of Washington and Elm Streets. Upon officers’ arrival, one person was deceased and another individual sustained serious bodily injuries.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the two vehicles were described as a 2008 Chevy Uplander and a 1998 Chevy Suburban. The Investigation revealed, 22-year-old, Travis Sexton, of Freemont, was driving the Chevy Uplander. He was the sole occupant of this vehicle. The other vehicle involved was a Chevy Suburban. This vehicle was driven by 28-year-old, Michelle Moss of Kokomo. Also, in Moss’s vehicle was three additional passengers.

As the investigation continued, it appeared that the Chevy Uplander being driven by Travis Sexton was traveling eastbound on Elm Street approaching Washington. Sexton disregarded the stop sign at Washington and hit the Chevy Suburban that was traveling southbound on Washington Street. The impact caused the Chevy Suburban to become inverted.

Moss received serious injuries and was flown to an Indianapolis hospital by helicopter for treatment. Two other passengers received minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Another passenger in the Chevy Suburban, was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene.

The Howard County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. The deceased was identified as 24-year-old, Kaysie Nickole Talley of Kokomo. Death was pronounced at 8:56 p.m. on Sunday. Autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25, at the Howard County Coroner’s Office.

The investigation further revealed that Travis Sexton was impaired at the time of the crash. Sexton was operating a motor vehicle at a rate of .142 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath. Illegal drugs are also suspected to be a factor in Sexton’s impairment. A search warrant was applied for and granted from Howard County Superior III Court for a blood test from Sexton. Those results are pending laboratory analysis. Once medically cleared from Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo, Sexton was arrested and transported to the Howard County Jail. Sexton was preliminarily booked in on the charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle while Causing Death (9-30-5-5, a level 4 felony) and Operating a Motor Vehicle while causing Serious Bodily Injury (9-30-5-4(a)(3), a level 4 felony).
