Light Freezing Rain and Snow in Forecast

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a Special Weather Statement for central Indiana, including Clinton County, as light freezing rain and snow are expected Sunday night and Monday morning which will likely cause travel problems.

A storm system will track through the Ohio Valley late Sunday into Monday bringing a wintry mix of participation to central Indiana. Precipitation will begin as light snow Sunday afternoon and evening before transitioning to a freezing rain and snow mix Sunday night and early Monday as low level temperatures warm.

The recent stretch of bitterly cold air over the last two weeks has left ground and road temperatures frigid. Even if air temperatures warm to near or above freezing Sunday night and Monday with rain as the primary precipitation type, the water will freeze immediately on exposed surfaces, making them icy and hazardous.

The Monday morning commute will likely be impacted. The greatest threat of freezing rain will be from midnight Sunday night through mid-morning Monday. In addition, light snow accumulations are possible Sunday night.

People should prepare for the possibility of winter weather Sunday night through Monday. Stay updated on the latest forecasts as slight changes in temperatures can have a significant impact to precipitation type and amounts.

This storm is on the heels of bitterly cold weather that will still be around for another day. Saturday night’s low is forecast for 4 below zero which will make wind chills 5 below to 15 below zero. Temperatures are forecast to warm into the upper 20’s during the day Sunday. However, wind chills will still be 9 below to 1 above zero until midday.
