Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-65 Sends Four People to the Hospital

Just before 11 p.m. Saturday, emergency crews were called to I-65 southbound near Whiteland Road for reports of a multi-vehicle crash. The first responders on the scene reported a large crash scene involving approximately 11 vehicles and several injuries. As police and medical personnel sorted through the crash it was determined a total of four people were in need of medical evaluation, one patient was in critical condition and a medical helicopter was summoned to the scene. Three others were transported to area hospitals by ambulance, non with life threatening injuries.

Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionist F/Sgt. Tyler Utterback was called to assist with the investigation. Preliminarily, he believes a tow truck was slowing in the left lane to remove an abandoned vehicle from the left shoulder. As the tow truck slowed a black pick-up collided with the tow truck, then was struck by a third vehicle from behind. After the pick-up spun and came to rest in the road it was struck again by a box truck. There were only four vehicles involved in the collision however several other vehicles struck debris in the roadway causing damage. The driver of the pick-up was flown to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, he is expected to survive.

All southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed. This crash is still under investigation and there is no further information to release at this time.
