At approximately 5 p.m. Saturday, deputies from the Howard County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) were dispatched to the southeast corner of State Road 22 and County Road 300 East for reports of an airplane crash.
Upon arrival, deputies located a twin-engine plane a few hundred yards from the roadway in a soybean field. Upon further investigation, deputies discovered the plane was occupied by one person, whom appeared to be deceased. Deputies then requested the Howard County Coroner, whom upon arrival pronounced the pilot deceased on scene.
On Sunday, an autopsy was performed at the request of the Howard County Coroner’s Office. According to the coroner, Dr. Steven J. Seele, the deceased was positively identified as 59-year-old Dr. Daniel P. Greenwald, M.D. of Tampa, Florida. Dr. Seele further stated that preliminary results indicate that Dr. Greenwald died as the result of blunt force trauma in direct correlation with the crash.
At this time, the final cause of death is still pending as the Howard County Sheriff’s Office and Howard County Coroner’s Office continue to work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
