Sugar Creek District Cub Scouts held their annual Pinewood Derby and Scout Fair Saturday, Sugar Creek District is comprised of Scouting units from Montgomery, Boone, Clinton and part of Hendricks Counties.
The scouts build their own race cars from a block of wood and raced them down a 35-foot 8-lane aluminum track. Cars reach 200+ mph. Adults and scout siblings could also enter to race in their own divisions. There were approximately 30 cars entered and each car raced on each lane and average times from each lane were calculated to determine which car advanced to the final heats.
The Scout Fair consisted of ten carnival games and a face painting booth. Games included plinko, miniature golf, ring toss, skeeball, Bozo game, etc.… Also, there was a station to build and launch water bottle rockets. Several rockets easily reached 100+ feet in the air. Scouts had fun playing the games and winning prizes.
Outside there were vehicle displays. Paddacks Wrecker and Transport brought out a heavy wrecker rotator for scouts to climb in cab to see gauges, switches and blow air horn. Grant King Racers brought out three vintage race cars and an Indy 500 race car driver. John Martin raced at the Indianapolis 500 five times during the 70’s and built the engines for the cars he drove. He also gave a small talk to the scouts about his experiences. Frankfort Fire Department was there with a large fire truck for scouts to explore and lots of their equipment to check out. Clinton County’s Sheriff’s office was on hand with a vehicle for scouts to look at. The weather was great, and all the scouts had an awesome day!!
This event and further events are open to public to come and enjoy.
