Two People Killed in Airplane Crash Near Mt. Comfort Airport

Around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, an airplane with two passengers on board crashed into a farm field just north of the Mount Comfort Airport. Emergency crews were called to the area of County Road 500 North and 400 West after several people called 911 to report a plane crash. The first responders to the scene had difficulty reaching the wreckage due to muddy conditions. Once deputies from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, troopers from the State Police and fire personnel reached the wreckage they found no survivors. After further investigation it was determined there were two people on board the plane and both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Currently, federal investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and National Traffic Safety Board are on scene conducting an investigation trying to determine what caused the crash. The remains of the two victims were recovered by the Hancock County Coroner’s Office, the identity of the victims is being withheld at this time.

Any further media inquiries should be directed to the NTSB, who are the lead investigators. The scene around the wreckage will be restricted, including the restriction of UAVs (drones) until the wreckage is removed, which will likely happen Thursday.
