Two Separate Crashes Close One Lane and Exit Ramp on I-65

At approximately 11:16 a.m. Thursday on I-65 southbound near the 178 mile marker (that is between the exit and entrance ramp at the 178 exit), a car attempted to turn left onto the interstate causing a semi to strike the front end. Two other semis attempted to avoid the crash and rear ended the other causing them both to crash.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Stephen Grayson has shown that a black 2014 Lincoln MKZ driven by Howard F. Weaver, 88 of Idaville, IN was coming up the ramp from SR 43 onto I-65 SB when he apparently got confused and attempted to turn left to go north in the SB lanes.. A blue 2018 Kenworth semi driven by Joseph M. McClain, 64 of Humbolt, IL pulling a trailer struck the Lincoln as he attempted to go north. The Lincoln was severely damaged and the front bumper on the semi was pushed into the right front steering wheel.

As other vehicles came upon the crash, traffic started to slow. A white 2018 Freightliner owned by FedEx and driven by Dawn Williams ,47 of Morton Grove, IL pulling a single trailer moved from the left lane to the right lane and slowed for the traffic. A red 2019 Volvo Pulling a 2000 Cottrell car hauler driven by David Bjork, 68 of Elgin, IL failed to slow and ran into the rear of the FedEx Trailer. Both vehicles ran off the right side of the roadway. The FedEx truck rolled onto its side and the car hauler jackknifed and came to rest in the ditch.

No one was seriously hurt. Weaver and Williams were transported to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette with non-life threatening injuries. Bjork was cited for following to close. The right lane and the ramp were closed for about one hour for cleanup and investigation of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
