Shirley F. O’Neal

Shirley Frances (Hathaway) O’Neal, 90, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at CrownPointe Assisted Living in Lebanon. She was born on September 10, 1933, in Boston, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Mary J. (Speed) Hathaway and Harold Lee Hathaway.

Shirley attended grade school and Jr. High in Quincy, Massachusetts. She moved to Kokomo, Indiana in July 1946 and graduated from Kokomo High School in 1950.

On November 15, 1952, she was married to Cedric C. “Ted” O’Neal at St. Joan of Arc Church in Kokomo; he preceded her in death on December 11, 1997.

She had lived in Ohio and Indiana before moving to Lebanon in 1969. Shirley worked at Globe American Corporation and American Standard Corporation in Kokomo, Indiana University in Bloomington, Lebanon School Corporation and the Lebanon Reporter, retiring after 21 years in 1998.

Shirley was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Women’s Club. She was also a former member of Lebanon Newcomers Club and a 25+ year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. Shirley did volunteer work at the Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels and served on the board. In addition, Shirley volunteered at Boone County Senior Services.

Survivors include her two children, Kevin R. (Tamara) O’Neal of Indianapolis and Mary Alice O’Neal of Brookville, Indiana; three grandchildren, Levi Jamison of St. Louis, Missouri, Kelly O’Neal of Indianapolis, and Ariel (Mark) Weaver of Marion; great grandson, Everett Jamison of Indianapolis; and two stepsisters, Frances Ann Kellar of Kokomo and Marilyn Jean Ulerick of Kokomo.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Michael J. O’Neal; daughter-in-law, Jean O’Neal; and stepfather, Frank H. Miller.

Visitation is planned from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon Street in Lebanon, Indiana. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. following visitation at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 319 East South Street, in Lebanon. Interment will follow services at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lebanon.

Memorials may be made in her memory to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
