The Boone REMC participated as one of 28 electric cooperatives across the state in the 2024 “Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day” on Friday, Oct. 11.

In celebration of National Cooperative Month every October, employees of electric cooperatives across the state unite together for a day of service to collectively demonstrate one of the Seven Cooperative Principles, concern for community.

The Boone REMC saw ten employees participate in the special day by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Boone County to help continue the mission of the organization by aiding in the creation of its first neighborhood. Boone REMC Communications Director Mandy Saucerman commented about the work completed by the team last Friday.

“We’re proud to support organizations like Habitat whose mission, like ours, is to improve quality of life,” Saucerman said. “Community Day provides us with the opportunity to work in tandem with other cooperatives throughout the state to make a positive impact and tell our cooperative story.”

The volunteers were tasked with installing drywall, hurricane ties and caulking one of the first homes erected in the Grace Fields neighborhood, the first neighborhood planned by the Habitat for Humanity of Boone County. The completed neighborhood is expected to include 24 homes.

Habitat for Humanity of Boone County Executive Director Liz Qua expressed the reasoning behind the construction of the neighborhood and how the efforts of the Boone REMC team and volunteers aid in the organization’s vision.

“Boone County is facing a housing crisis,” Qua said. “Grace Fields is our solution to this problem, and we are so appreciative to all our partners in this project. Without volunteers like Boone REMC employees, we would not be able to build safe, affordable homes for hardworking families.”

Habitat for Humanity is the only not-for-profit organization in Boone County working to provide sustainable, secure, affordable, long-term housing for those in need.
