With the brand new Aquatic Center expected to open this spring, the Board of Works approved the official name of the facility on Monday — Sapphire Bay.

“We’ve done a lot of thinking,” said Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets. “(Community Development and Outreach Director) Kimberly (Black) has worked really hard on it. We’ve been through a lot of different names and when she said ‘Sapphire Bay’, I said I love it because we’re the Gem City. So, we combine the Gem City. We have the blue because when I think of blue I think blue is for Frankfort.”

Sheets added this will be a real good name, especially when it comes to marketing.

In other news, the Frankfort Police Department is going through an accreditation process with the state of Indiana.

“What seems to be a dominant theme is making police departments accredited,” said Police Chief Scott Shoemaker. “Now, it’s not forced yet. It’s still voluntary. Captain (Evan) Hall and I with our command staff have talked about lets just get going on it now. If it’s something we’re going to have to eventually do, let’s get in.”

Hall is in charge of the program.

Shoemaker added this will be a 12-15 month process to make sure everything is official.

There are two new businesses having ribbon cuttings in the next week. The Frankfort Discount Emporium, which is located near Sherwin Williams is having a ribbon cutting at noon on Friday, while Culver’s, which is located right across the street from Frankfort High School, will have their ribbon cutting at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Frankfort Street Superintendent Jason Forsythe announced the Annual Spring Cleanup will be held May 1-6. Hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday (May 1-5) and from 8 a.m.to noon on Saturday.

Mayor Sheets announced that the rates for The Commons Golf Course will be announced at their next meeting on March 27 at 5 p.m.

Fire Chief Matt Stidham announced that Scott Freeman has been elevated to captain, and Shoemaker named Andrew Snyder has been elevated to sergeant.
