Average ISTEP Scores Down Across The Board

Inside INdiana Business is reporting that this year’s ISTEP scores indicate lower performance by Hoosier students compared to 2017 results. The Indiana Department of Education says some 2.6 million assessments were given in 2018. English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies scores for grades 3-8 and grade 10 all decreased compared to last year.

The IDOE says scores increased slightly in English/Language Arts for eighth graders and for third graders in Mathematics.

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick says “ISTEP+ is one of the many tools Indiana uses to measure student achievement and this year’s results indicate we are moving in the right direction. Indiana’s classrooms are full of dedicated educators who spend each day preparing our children for academic success, and I am grateful for their hard work.”

The state will soon transition away from the ISTEP format to the ILEARN assessment. The state says the new testing platform will better ensure educators can determine students’ proficiency based on Indiana Academic Standards.
