Change Coming to State Road 28 Project

There will be a change in the State Road 28 project on Tuesday.

Frankfort Street Superintendent Jason Forsythe said Monday at the Board of Works meeting that the Indiana Department of Transportation is going to open the intersections at Main, First and Third while closing the intersections at Columbia, Second and Fourth. This is scheduled to take place around noon Tuesday.

“It (the entire south side) was originally suppose to be done in November,” said Forsythe. “I still believe they will have that one side done. But obviously, the other side will take a little bit longer.”

Forsythe added he thinks the north side of the project will much quicker.

Forsythe also addressed some parking concerns just off the downtown area.

“Between Sims and Clay, people are parking on both sides of the road,” said Forsythe. “In the evening, there’s a ton of vehicles down there parked on both sides of the street. I can’t even get a plow through there. So, my worry is can a fire truck get through there. Obviously, no. An ambulance can’t get through there. We’re going to shut down parking on the south side and we’ll keep the north side to park on.”

Forsythe added he is not sure when that will happen.

Also at the Board of Works, Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets said there will be some work going on in the area where the old Exide plant use to sit. It is currently a vacant lot.

“They’ve been working with Building Services,” said Sheets. “IDEM has been coming into town and they have decided to go ahead and move forward with boring holes to check the soil in different areas.”

Sheets added they have had individuals interested in the property.

In the city council meeting Monday night, the council approved the second reading of a resolution of an ordinance establishing the procedures and fees for trash pickup and the disposal of garbage and waste.

“This is something that really needs to be done,” said Sheets. “When we first started having our own budget for the sanitation, it was suppose to be self-sustaining. The revenues and expenditures were suppose to match. Here lately, we are struggling to get that done with the user fees where they are.”

Sheets added the third and final reading of the resolution will occur on Tuesday, October 12.
